All Gameboys come with an electrical component called a capacitor. This component, while tiny, helps to play a critical role in storing energy. The typical lifespan of a capacitor is about 10-20 years, which is well beyond the lifespan of all Gameboys. If you have noticed that your volume is soft, the capacitor is almost always the culprit. Replacing it gives your Gameboy another 10-20 years of life, and removes the chance that it may fail and corrode your motherboard.
